The English golfer Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Playoff Battle Against Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated remarkable nerve to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, defeating his compatriot in a tense playoff after a topsy-turvy last day of play.

Rai nailed a decisive birdie from around eight feet to clinch the victory, echoing his only previous tournament triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a play-off win over Fleetwood.

Final Round Drama

Rai entered the last day with a one-shot advantage over countryman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, 67 final round that featured seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.

Fleetwood moved one shot clear with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a 10-foot birdie putt to win outright on the last hole.

Playoff Decider

That led to a play-off at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5m (£1.13m) in winnings.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even more person. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was really special,” said Rai, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on your game and maintaining focus, it’s hard to put into words at the present how it feels. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”

Notable Performances

The Northern Irish star left himself just too much to do, finishing one shot short in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a stunning 10-under closing round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s best-ever score on the DP World Tour, comprising eight birdies and one eagle.

Højgaard fired six birdie putts of his as well, but his chances of leading the standings were hit by a bogey on the twelfth. England’s Richard Mansell produced an excellent final-round seven-under to finish tied for fifth with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
