One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is departing from the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a batch of emails between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.
The economist commented in a statement that he was "appreciative for the opportunity to have contributed, excited about the prospects of the organization, and anticipate observing their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who formerly presided over Harvard University, declared on Monday that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his association with the convicted sex offender.
The recently released emails showed that Summers corresponded with the financier until the eve of his 2019 arrest for suspected trafficking of underage individuals.
In additional comments, the AI firm stated it accepted Summers' decision to step down.
"We appreciate his significant contributions and the insight he provided to the Board," the company remarked.
This announcement follows after both chambers of Congress agreed on Tuesday to pass a legislation that would mandate the US justice department to disclose its documents on Epstein.
The bill will subsequently move to the office of the White House for endorsement. He has indicated he intends to sign the measure, after modifying his stance on the matter following objections from his base.
A group of financier-linked messages released by the legislative panel last week included numerous prominent individuals in the billionaire's previous network, without implying any criminal activity by those people.
The messages showed that Summers and the financier dined together frequently, with Epstein often seeking to link the official to influential international personalities.
After the correspondence were released with the wider community, the former official stated he assumed "complete accountability for my ill-advised decision to continue corresponding with Mr Epstein".
He continued that he desired "to reestablish faith and fix connections with the people nearest to me".
The economist held leadership roles under party leaders; serving as treasury secretary under the former president, and as leader of the National Economic Council under the former leader.
He headed Harvard from the early 2000s and continues to be a academic there. When stating his departure from public duties recently on this week, he indicated he would persist with his teaching commitments.
Following his statement on Monday, the policy organization, a left-leaning think tank in Washington where he was a senior fellow, confirmed that Summers was ceased to be affiliated with the group.
He joined the board of the technology firm, which makes ChatGPT, in 2023 - following a defeated move to replace its top executive the company leader.
