Spoiler alert - This article reveals details from Celebrity Traitors finale
Throughout the season, viewers witnessed murders, betrayals, intense glares, and a memorable moment that pierced all tension.
Yet on the final evening, the final winner of the inaugural celebrity edition was revealed.
Out of nineteen participants, only five remained: Traitors and loyal players facing off for the prize.
Before long, the field narrowed to only three contenders: the final players.
In the end, funny man Alan Carr emerged as the champion, in a surprising outcome that went viral and left him emotional.
"It's been tearing me apart, my apologies," he exclaimed, admitting to the remaining faithfuls that he was actually a traitor. "I feel terrible about this."
"You played amazingly," they consoled him. "It's all right."
Online platforms immediately exploded with this development. "The worst deceiver being the best traitor ever," wrote one user.
"It couldn't have been a better conclusion," wrote a different person, while a third described it as "the television highlight of the year."
The organization he selected, a cancer charity, gets to keep all the prize money, with the final pot reaching £87,500.
The comedian's evolution from giggle liability to strategic player was among the most memorable aspects of the season.
But his win still shocked viewers surprised, according to entertainment reporters.
"The idea of Alan, of all people, executing an expert performance in deception felt about as likely as him maintaining a straight face through one of his own punchlines."
During follow-up conversations, fellow players summed up why no one had ever really suspected him.
"Alan could have come down to breakfast in a green cloak and I wouldn't have believed he was a traitor. I was too busy laughing," one participant said.
"The majority didn't vote for him because how does one vote for someone who is so loveable?" asked a different contestant.
The winner stated he had "absolutely loved" his experience with the show.
"I'd like to do it again... I don't think it would be successful a second time!"
Thursday evening's episode was lengthened to 70 minutes on television. There was an unusual opening than typical episodes, as every celebrity knew who'd make it at the morning gathering.
Viewers heard particularly inspiring, and very un-Traitors-esque soundtrack, as the episode revisited some moments from each of the finalists' experience in the game.
As ever, the comedian provided unforgettable quotes.
"Let's face it, I began this game a bit of a nervous wreck. I've betrayed close allies under the bus, I've eliminated national treasures in plain sight. I'm clearly a better liar and traitor than I believed."
Meanwhile, another contestant noted that being in the final was "significantly more pressure than competing with a national team", while someone else said he was "completely amazed" to have lasted this long.
Early on of the finale, various contestants appeared to be attempting to become the new style icon of the competition, taking over from an earlier departed fashionable contestant.
Carr emerged at breakfast looking like a 1950s US chat show host in patterned burgundy attire, before changing into an embellished light-colored outfit.
But he was out-jacketted by a fellow player's maroon velvet tuxedo. Impressive style.
Following this was the challenge, with the final players boarding a train named - naturally - The Traitors Express.
This task involved destroying portraits of eliminated players. Have sympathy for one participant who managed to get hit in the head THREE times by the cover of a heavy wooden box.
Soon after, the moment arrived for the elimination discussion.
Two traitors did a pinky promise beforehand, vowing to stick together. "We've come a long way, I won't betray him," said a player, while the other just giggled.
However, one did stick to his promise. But, managing to stay under the radar for the majority of the competition, the other still received the majority elimination votes.
The remaining traitor appeared he was in significant distress to be the last traitor standing. "Being alone, I'm frightened," he said. "I'm unpredictable, a rudderless ship."
Online platforms and onlookers were similarly upset.
"I did NOT want this contestant to be eliminated. An endearing deceiver," said a commentator.
"Your legacy will remain in the show's legacy," posted another user.
However, there remained no time to dwell on their elimination. Soon, they were at the final stage - which was the moment everyone anticipated.
The last players stood over the fire pit. Meanwhile, the partnership collapsed, precisely when it was most crucial, in a truly WTF moment.
One contestant was eliminated in dramatic fashion - following a surprising decision from their partner, who betrayed them.
"This pains me to be stabbed in the back last minute like that," remarked the eliminated player. Subsequently, we learned that if they ever communicate, the betrayed player calls their former ally as a traitor.
Finally, just three players were still competing: the last participants.
A contestant, looking incredibly smug, chose to conclude the game. The same decision was made by another, and it all came down to the third, who did the same - resulting in the deceiver emerged victorious.
According to commentators, the scene where remaining contestants comforted the winner was "beautiful TV". "I predict it could be a contender for outstanding scene at television honors," they commented.
Happily, the champion quickly regained composure from his bout of tears, and was able to enjoy his victory.
"What a rollercoaster. I thought I was terrible at deception, my expressions gave me away and now I stand the champion," he said.
And he even made light of the memorable elimination - his best friend in an early episode - by reaching over the host in the final scene and making contact.
"You've got something on your face," he said, with his trademark giggle.
The last few weeks of celebrity gossiping, scheming and the occasional unexpected moments may seem like one big crazy jumbled dream. Yet it actually all happen. And we will miss it.
